• Ericsson Garage to focus on industry relevant innovation topics in the area of cloud computing, virtualization, 5G, IoT and analytics
• Collaborative space for operators, enterprises, developers, universities and end users
• Building on Ericsson’s existing R&D center in Hungary, the largest in the country

Ericsson has today announced the opening of the Ericsson Garage at its research and development facility in Budapest, Hungary, a technology incubation lab, working with radical innovations connected to cloud computing, virtualization, 5G, IoT and analytics. As a first step the Garage will focus on cloud computing and virtualization.

Ericsson creates an innovation space where all players in a Networked Society can team up, including representatives from operators, academia, start-up companies and players from other industries as well as local communities.

Chris Mattheisen, CEO of Magyar Telekom, says:

“The Ericsson Garage is a great initiative. I believe it will be a good space for all players to team up, collaborate and bring innovative services to the market across industries.”

The Garage will provide opportunities to cooperate in the evolution of technology in areas like cloud and virtualization, 5G, data analytics, IoT, SDN. It will include the possibility for closer cooperation via support or integration activities, joint innovation and prototyping as well as demos to operators and enterprises.

Valter D’Avino, head of Region Western and Central Europe, says:

“I believe the new Ericsson Garage will strengthen our foundation for creating sustainable business for Ericsson and its customers in a Networked Society. For example, we can look at one area that the Garage will showcase: cloud and virtualization technologies at the first step. We believe this area will transform the economics of delivering new services to market.”

One initial activity – to support the Ericsson Garage – is to organize an innovation event, bringing start-up companies and operators together and strengthening the university cooperation in the area of cloud and virtualization.

Dr. Gábor Péceli, Rector of Budapest University of Technology and Economics, says:

“Budapest University of Technology and Economics is the oldest and most prestigious technical university in the region. We have been cooperating with Ericsson for more than 23 years, and this exemplary cooperation has served as a model for other companies.

I see this new initiative as a means to take our joint activities to the next level, where the industry can utilise and build on our results. The industrial application of our research can serve as an input to our education, and to equip the new generation of engineers with this up-to-date and practical knowledge. Ericsson’s initiative excellently fits to the concept of our University-Industry Cooperation Center, which serves to attract industrial and other players closer to latest technologies and related knowledge available at our university.”

In the heart of Europe, Budapest has a historical reputation of strong links to engineering, and Ericsson have had its operations in the city for more than a century. With its more than 1200 engineers, the Ericsson R&D center in Budapest is involved in the research and development of key products.
