The most environmentally-friendly data center in Central and Eastern Europe is being installed in Lithuania

Baltic Data Center, a leader in the management of data centers and information systems in the Baltic States, will install a data center in Vilnius that will be one of the most environment-friendly ones in Europe. Instead of conventional cooling systems, this centre will use outdoor air. The new data center will use KyotoCooling technologies that have not been yet applied in the region. These technologies are being implemented by intelligent engineering solutions company Fima.

LTL 5.8 million have been invested in the new data center, the cooling of which is based on a rotary heat exchanger. This technology is currently implemented in only two companies in the Netherlands. It will allow reducing electricity costs by even 8 times. Environmental friendliness and energy efficiency will also be ensured by the possibility to use hot air from the data center for heating the company’s office premises.

According to Saulius Markunas, Director of Baltic Data Center, a company belonging to TEO Group, climatic conditions in Lithuania are favourable for cooling the data center with outdoor air. The ecological aspect was also important when choosing the KyotoCooling technology – this innovation will allow saving as much electricity as is consumed on average by approximately 1000 families in their homes”, - S. Markunas says.

Valdas Vrubliauskas, Head of Automation and Data Networks Solutions Department of UAB Fima, the company which is installing the data center, says that the uniqueness of the system, which has only recently been started to be used in the world, is that it uses "free", outdoor air. “During the operation of this cooling system, ventilators intake cold air from the outdoors and “transmit” it to a rotary heat exchanger. It gets cooled from the outdoor air temperature, whilst at the same time cooling the server room as well. The system operates on this principle until the outdoor temperature rises to 22 degrees Celsius above zero – then traditional cooling solutions are put into use”, - the company’s representative says.

Conventional data centers are cooled by using freon systems, which consume up to three quarters of the electricity required for the operation of servers.

Last year, Baltic Data Center installed the first in the Baltic States liquid-cooled data center, allowing to save up to 3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
