Unicorn Systems Contributes to Integration of Czech, Slovak, and Hungarian Markets

Unicorn Systems delivers a software solution for interconnection of Czech, Slovak, and Hungarian short-term electricity market.

The start of trading completed the successful project prepared by national regulators (ERU, ÚRSO, and MEH), transmission system operators (ČEPS, SEPS, and MAVIR), and electricity market organizers (OTE, OKTE, and HUPX) from the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, and Hungary. Market coupling brings higher competition and price harmonization, as well as stability and security of electricity supply.

Trading is carried out through implicit auctions (market coupling), in accordance with the European target model and continuing market integration. EPEX SPOT, the day-ahead market operator in France and Germany, has been chosen as the provider of the central matching service for the three territories. The software solution delivered by Unicorn Systems provides a central communication node for energy exchanges and transmission system operators. The solution has been delivered as an extension of the Damas Energy trading system of SEPS, with primary focus on its reliability and security. Its other benefits include openness of the system to other markets (e.g., Poland or Romania) and its readiness for smooth coupling with markets of the regions of Western Europe, for which Unicorn Systems delivers similar solutions.

This project is an important step towards further integration of day-ahead markets throughout Europe, which is a prerequisite for formation of a common pan-European electricity market, scheduled by the European Commission at the end of 2014.
