BSU and BSUIR Teams Win Silver and Bronze at ACM ICPC World Finals

From May 14 to May 18, the 36th ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) World Finals were held in Warsaw, Poland. More than 25,000 students from 2219 universities of 85 countries participated in the qualifying rounds of the championship. Best teams of 112 universities made to the finals. According to the regulations, four gold, four silver, and four bronze medals were awarded to twelve winning teams that showed the best results.

The teams of two Belarusian universities, namely the Belarusian State University (BSU) and the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics (BSUIR) won silver and bronze of the contest, respectively. Having solved seven (BSU) and six (BSUIR) problems, Belarusian teams outscored their counterparts from numerous famous universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, and Stanford University.

Since 1998, IBA has been sponsoring Belarusian student teams. IBA is the general sponsor of the student team of the Belarusian State University (BSU). In 2004, the team won gold medals at the 28th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. In 2007, the BSU Team showed good results and was ranked as a skilled team at the ACM ICPC. In 2008, the BSU team won bronze medals of the championship.

Sergei Levteev, IBA CEO, comments: “For nearly two decades, IBA has strongly supported universities and student programmers trying to contribute to their intellectual and creative development in every possible way. We are interested in that kind of cooperation. It is where we see our common future. Young experts are in high demand even at the early stage of their career. Talented young people join IT companies, and the intellectual potential of our society grows and becomes a national treasure “.

Levteev has heartily congratulated Pavel Mandrik, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics of BSU, and Alexei Leshchev, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Computer Systems and Networks of BSUIR, with these spectacular results.

Levteev says: “These results are a real indicator of your efforts in students’ education and in development of the country’s positive reputation at the international arena.”
