Record-Breaking e-Voting Participation

From October 8 to October 14, 2009, advance polls for the elections to the local government councils took place in Estonia. During that time, voters could use their electronic ID cards and personal computers to cast their ballots securely over the Internet from the comfort of their homes, using the e-voting software developed by Cybernetica.

Of the 658,575 total votes counted, 104,413 were e-votes, breaking the previous record of 58,669 set in Spring 2009 during the elections to the European Parliament. For comparison, less than 10,000 e-votes were cast in the very first e-voting in 2005. Incidentally, the e-voting solution can provide secure and reliable services to a much larger number of voters than can be found in Estonia.

Despite an unexpectedly large number of e-voters, the software worked flawlessly both on the client and server side, once again proving the technical excellence of software engineers at Cybernetica. Furthermore, Cybernetica received praise for improvements implemented, such as support for visually impaired users, support for modern software platforms, and several usability improvements that made the e?voting process a smooth experience.
