SoftJournal Visited PPOPP 2009 Symposium

February 14-18, 2009, the 14th symposium on Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming (PPoPP) took place in Raleigh, North Carolina. The PPoPP forum has been organized to discuss the questions of different dimensions of parallel programming, e. g. various tools, techniques, and speakers’ practical experience. The forum takes place every year to make parallel programming and computing main-stream.

The most outstanding specialists in the parallel programming realm reported at the symposium. There are some of the most interesting topics discussed: the theory and most frequently used models of parallel programming, parallel programming languages, runtime systems and compilers, middleware used for parallel systems, concurrent data structures, and much more.

“We enjoyed the reports of most of the speakers at PPoPP 2009, but the tutorial of Paul Bryan, Georgia Institute of Technology, ‘Fast Simulation without Bogus Results’, was especially good. Paul told us how to reduce costs of exhaustive workloads simulation. His tutorial provided a comprehensive background of statistical concept used with sampling. And what we like most of all, is that the tutorial helps researchers overcome the sampling complexity. So, we think, events like PPoPP symposium really achieve their aim to make Parallel Programming a new mainstream,” comments Mariya Barisenka, SoftJournal business software magazine http://www.softjournal.ru/  editor.
